The Federal Government has begun a nationwide vocational training programme targeting more than 18,000 artisans and unemployed Nigerians. The exercise will take place at 229 accredited training centres across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The initiative, coordinated by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), is aimed at equipping participants with practical vocational skills, entrepreneurship training, and starter packs to support self-employment and reduce poverty.
Speaking during the launch in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, said the programme supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by helping vulnerable Nigerians become economically self-reliant.
Doro explained that the two-week programme is designed for individuals with basic vocational knowledge who need additional training to improve their skills and productivity. Participants will also receive tools needed to establish or expand their businesses.
NSIPA National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer, Badamasi Lawal, said beneficiaries will receive training in 14 vocational fields, including agriculture, automobile technology, carpentry, catering, fashion design, plumbing, electrical installation, welding, masonry, hospitality services, jewellery making, baking, vulcanising, and grinding machine operations.
Participants will also undergo entrepreneurship training covering business management, financial literacy, digital literacy, customer relations, and enterprise sustainability. Successful trainees will be provided with starter packs relevant to their chosen trades to help them begin work immediately.
Lawal noted that priority was given to unemployed youths, women, vulnerable persons, and economically disadvantaged Nigerians. He added that the programme will also ensure that thousands of vocational starter packs previously left unused in government warehouses are put to productive use.
