Gunmen have reportedly attacked a police station in Nigeria’s southeastern state of Enugu, killing a constable.
The assailants also vandalised facilities at the Awgu Divisional Police Headquarters and made away with weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and two riot guns, a police source said, with the slain constable identified as Akpa Emmanuel.
Although details remain unclear, tension has gripped Awgu town, with heavy security presence as spy agents and other operatives have taken over the area following the attack that occurred in the early hours of Monday.
The new Commissioner of Police in Enugu, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has reportedly deployed the Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Special Forces, the Police Mobile Force (PMF), the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), and other tactical teams to strengthen security at the division.
The attack comes just weeks after a new Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was posted to the station.
In a related incident, gunmen also attacked the Inyi Divisional Police Headquarters in Oji-River Local Government Area around 2:00 a.m. on the same day.
In the Inyi attack, no casualties or damage were reported as security agents successfully repelled the assault.
The Enugu State Police Command’s spokesman SP Daniel Ndukwe could not be reached for comment.
