ABUJA – Armed men in Nigeria’s capital have reportedly killed a former Nigerian Immigration Service’s.

Former NIS’s Comptroller-General David Shikfu Parradang was killed by armed kidnappers abducted him in the early hours of Tuesday in the Area 1 district of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He was reportedly trailed from a bank, where he had just withdrawn money, before being taken by his assailants.

The kidnappers robbed him of the cash before killing him, a security analyst and counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, said.

David’s murder has further heightened fears over the worsening security situation in the country’s capital, where cases of kidnappings and violent crimes have been on the rise despite repeated assurances from the authorities.

Parradang, a seasoned immigration officer, served in the NIS for over three decades, holding key positions across several states, including Kano, Lagos, Kwara, Enugu, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), according to local media.

He was a graduate of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and had been honoured with the national award of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).

The Nation newspaper quoted a source as saying: “It is sad to hear that our brother David Parradang was shot and killed yesterday. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

Security agencies have reportedly launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his abduction and killing, with efforts underway to track down those responsible.

INSECURITY AND VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA

For more than a decade, civilians in Nigeria have faced multiple security threats and risk of atrocities as result of attacks, kidnappings and extortion by various non-state armed groups.

Armed groups and gangs, including so-called “bandits,” have – for many years – perpetrated widespread atrocities, including murder, rape, kidnapping, organized cattle-rustling and plunder. Armed herdsmen are also destroying vast swaths of farmland, prompting many farmers to abandon their land out of fear of attack.
