A 14-year-old boy has been charged with a terrorism-related offence in the United Kingdom over an alleged plan to target mosques in London, police said.

The Metropolitan Police said the teenager is accused of preparing acts of terrorism linked to extreme right-wing ideology.

Authorities described the case as serious and said it is likely to cause concern among the public and local communities.

The boy was initially arrested on July 9 in connection with criminal damage to a vehicle.

However, further investigations and searches reportedly uncovered documents that led to terrorism-related charges.

Police said they do not believe the case is linked to a wider threat but have contacted the affected mosques in Sutton, south London, to provide support and security advice.

The suspect is due to appear before a London magistrates’ court.

Authorities also said they are working closely with local Muslim communities to offer reassurance and keep them informed about developments in the case.

The incident follows several recent cases involving alleged threats or attacks targeting Muslim communities across the United Kingdom.
