His Excellency,
Governor Dapo Abiodun
Government House
Abeokuta, Ogun State
Dear Governor Abiodun,
Subject: Opposition to the Introduction of Shari’ah Law in Ogun State
We, the Yoruba Youth of Ogun State, are writing to express our strong opposition to the proposed implementation of Shari’ah law within our state. As young citizens who represent the future of Ogun State, we feel it is imperative to voice our concerns regarding this matter, which we believe could have significant implications for the unity and progress of our society.
While we respect the diverse cultures and religions present in our state, we must highlight that the introduction of Shari’ah law could potentially undermine the rights and freedoms that are core to our shared values as Nigerians. Implementing a legal system that is based on selective religious interpretations poses a risk of discrimination against individuals who do not adhere to the Islamic faith, particularly women and marginalized groups.
Our vision for Ogun State is one of inclusivity and equality, where every individual is afforded the same rights and opportunities, irrespective of their background or beliefs. We fear that the introduction of Shari’ah law may lead to divisions among our communities, fostering an environment that is contrary to our dreams of a united and progressive state.
Furthermore, we believe that the rule of law must prioritize fundamental human rights, ensuring that justice is accessible and equitable for all citizens. Shari’ah law could undermine these principles by allowing for legal interpretations that contradict internationally recognized human rights standards. This is not the future we envision for our state.
We are committed to advocating for a society that celebrates our rich cultural heritage while upholding the rights and dignity of every individual. We urge you to reconsider any moves toward adopting Shari’ah law in Ogun State and to uphold legal frameworks that safeguard our collective rights and freedoms.
We trust in your leadership and commitment to the welfare of all citizens in Ogun State. Together, we can create a society that reflects our values of unity, peace, and progress.
Thank you for your attention to this pressing issue. We look forward to your understanding and support in protecting the rights of every individual in Ogun State.
Sincerely,
[Comrade Oyegunle Oluwamayowa Omotoyole]
