A lecturer at the Kano State Polytechnic, Kano, northwest Nigeria, was reportedly attacked in his office on Tuesday, 14 January 2025.
The attack on Aliyu Hamza Abdullahi was allegedly orchestrated by a female student and her boyfriend.
The incident occurred around 2pm while Abdullahi, who also serves as the department’s exam officer, was attending to students, according to the institution’s Public Relations Officer Auwal Ismail Bagwai.
The female student, whose identity remains undisclosed, stormed the office with her boyfriend, claiming the lecturer was an obstacle to her academic aspirations.
The confrontation escalated when the boyfriend produced a cutlass and attempted to strike the lecturer, aiming for his head. The swift intervention of nearby students and staff reportedly prevented the situation from turning fatal.
“The female student had wanted to change her admission to a different department but was told that her grades did not meet the requirements for her preferred course,” the PRO said in a statement.
“Angered that she was not able to get her wish, the student allegedly heaped the blame on the lecturer and called her boyfriend to teach him a lesson.
“The female student entered the office with her boyfriend, identifying the lecturer as the obstacle to her desired course. The boyfriend then produced a cutlass and launched an attack, aiming for the lecturer’s head.”
Bagwai added: “The lecturer sustained injuries to his hands while attempting to defend himself. Other students in the office intervened, prompting the assailants to flee the scene.”
Bagwai noted that the lecturer was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the state.
He explained that the security officers of the institutions were called upon to handle the case, adding that they had gone to Dorayi area of the state, where the female student and her boyfriend reside but were assaulted by a group of thugs.
“The student and her boyfriend have not been apprehended.
“Security agencies are actively investigating the matter and the perpetrators will not go scot free,” said Bagwai.
