13-Year-Old Killed As Fountain Collapses During Spain’s World Cup Victory Celebrations

A 13-year-old boy has died and several other people were injured after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s FIFA World Cup victory in the western Spanish city of Ciudad Rodrigo.

The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Monday as fans gathered in large numbers to celebrate Spain’s first World Cup title since 2010.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Ciudad Rodrigo City Hall expressed condolences to the victim’s family, describing the incident as a tragic end to what should have been a joyful occasion.

“The City Hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and presents its condolences for the death of a boy of 13.

“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy,” the statement read.

Emergency services said they received several calls shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time reporting that a fountain had collapsed on a crowd of people.

“A few minutes after 12:30 a.m. local time, rescue services received calls over a fountain collapsing on numerous people,” emergency services said in a post on X, adding that another teenager was among those injured.

According to local media, the fountain gave way after scores of supporters climbed onto the structure while celebrating Spain’s World Cup triumph.

The victory triggered jubilant scenes across Spain, with thousands of fans gathering in city centres, public squares and major landmarks, waving flags and singing in celebration of the national team’s success.

Authorities have repeatedly advised supporters to avoid climbing monuments and public infrastructure during celebrations, warning that overcrowding on such structures can lead to serious accidents.
