Ibadan – Nigeria’s Oyo State opposed a bail application filed on behalf of Queen Naomi Shilekunola Ogunseyi, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; popular radio broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, and a school principal, Abdullai Fasasi over the stampede at the Islamic High School, Ibadan, which claimed at least 35 lives and left many injured during an overcrowded funfair event last year’s December.
The defendants, who organised the event, face charges of negligence and endangering public safety, which led to the deadly stampede.
During a hearing on Tuesday at the Oyo State High Court, the defence team argued for bail, asserting that the accused posed no flight risk and were fully committed to cooperating with investigations.
In response, the state’s legal team, led by Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, strongly opposed the motion, emphasising the severity of the charges and the importance of ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
The presiding judge, Justice Kamarudeen Olawoyin, acknowledged the high stakes and public interest involved.
After considering arguments from both sides, Justice Olawoyin adjourned the ruling on the bail application till Tuesday, 13 January 2025, leaving the defendants’ fate uncertain.
Governor Seyi Makinde had insisted on Monday that justice must prevail in the case.
Speaking at the annual interfaith programme to mark the resumption of work at the state government secretariat, he reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law and refraining from any interference in the proceedings.
