ABUJA – At least one student was reportedly killed on Monday after explosion rocked an Islamic school in Nigeria’s capital Abuja.

Four others were also injured in the incident that happened at Islamiyyah School, Kuchibiyu Community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A public health practitioner in charge of the public health facility in the area who received the victims told local news outlets that one of the victims had the explosive (suspected to be IED) wrapped in a cloth in his hands and was discussing with three other friends.

He said it was in the process of trying to unwrap the object that it exploded, killing the boy instantly and injuring the three others and a girl who was selling ‘awara’

It was gathered that earlier in the day, the school had held a resumption assembly to welcome newly admitted students, who had resumed on January 3, 2025.

The Chairman of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), John Gabaya, said police operatives and a bomb were deployed to the scene of the explosion.

“Yes, there was an explosion at an Islamiyyah school today. One of the students was killed, with four others injured,” Gabaya said. “I asked the DPO to immediately take the Malam who brought those students from Katsina to Kuchibiyu so that he could interrogate him. But at the scene, one person died instantly.”

The explosion has heightened fears about security in schools and the risks of explosive materials in the hands of minors.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command could not be reached for comment.
