IBADAN – Disaster was averted after a gas truck caught fire along Nigeria’s Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near the Agidigbo area in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, the fire department in the state said on Friday.

Upon receiving alert of fire at exactly 12:10pm firefighting team was dispatched to the scene, Oyo State Fire Service’s General Manager Yemi Akinyinka said.

On arrival of the firefighting team – led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Adediji, the operatives discovered that a truck carrying domestic gas had caught fire, posing a severe risk of explosion.

However, the team’s rapid response subdued the blaze, preventing the fire from intensifying into a full-blown explosion.

A video seen by KOIKI Media showed firefighters working at the scene.

“Oyo State Fire Service agency has curtailed a truck on fire from Explosion along Ibadan/Lagos Expressway Agidigbo Area, Ibadan,” the agency said in a statement.

“The fire incident was reported to the Agency at exactly 12:10hrs of Friday 20th December, 2024 through GSM and CFM Adisa Kazeem of a gas tanker on fire at the above address.

“The personnel of the agency led by ACFS Adediji promptly deployed to the scene of Incident and arrived on time. On their arrival, it was discovered that a truck carrying domestic gas was involved in the inferno that might have led to an explosion.

“Prompt response of the agency curtailed and prevented it from leading to explosion. It was subdued and put under total control.

“Furthermore, the agency’s personnel are still on standby to forestall any form of distress.”
