A former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, from the northcentral state of Nasarawa, Dr. Joseph Haruna Kigbu, has been kidnapped by gunmen.
Dr. Kigbu was reportedly abducted on Tuesday evening on his way to Jos, the capital of Plateau, another north-central state.
The attack took place between Nunku in Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and Gwantu in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State, according to broadcaster AIT.
The police escort assigned to Dr. Kigbu, who attempted to resist the abduction was shot dead during a gun battle with the assailants.
Locals confirmed the incident, saying the bandits fired sporadically, causing panic among motorists in the area.
The villagers noted that the location has been a hotspot for criminal activities over the years.
The Nasarawa State Police Command did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Dr. Kigbu is a former member of the House of Representatives from Lafia/Obi federal constituency.
